Albert O. Hirschman lived many lives. Of German Jewish origin, anti-fascist, resistant to occupied France, emigrated to the United States, original economist, adviser to the Marshall Plan, great connoisseur of Latin America, author of a fundamental work in the field of development economics and of the history of ideas. Hirschman crossed many borders. In this book - in this long conversation - he takes a trip down memory lane, to his scientific contribution and to the consciousness of the 20th century, always starting from his proclaimed intellectual honesty.
ALBERT O. HIRSCHMAN (1915-2012) made extraordinary contributions to development economics and the theory of collective action. His work, heterodox and original, extended to the study of the moral and ideological origins of capitalism. His civil and political career is intertwined with the key events of the 20th century. In the post-war period he was one of the brains behind the Marshall Plan and one of the architects of the theory and practice of economic development. Author of major works such as The development strategy, Exit, voice and freedom, Passions and interests, Rhetorics of intransigence or Self-subversive tendencies, he culminated his academic career at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, where he 1993 granted a long interview. The result was this fascinating volume, full of information, lucidity and critical spirit.
