This book is an essay on the intellectual origins of the widely used, convenient and often appropriate, but also full of misunderstandings and contradictions, opposition between "civic nationalism" and "ethnic nationalism". Calhoun analyzes the fascinating figure and work of Hans Kohn, the great historian of nationalism as an engine of modernity, author of the classic The Idea of Nationalism.
Born in Illinois (USA) in 1953, Craig Calhoun — sociologist, anthropologist, historian of culture and nationalism — received his doctorate at Oxford. He is currently Professor of Social Sciences at Arizona State University and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. He has recently published (with Charles Taylor and Dilip Gaonkar) Degenerations of Democracy and edited The Green New Deal and the Future of Work and the anthology Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory. He is the author of more than a dozen books and a member of several academies and scientific societies. In Catalan he has published Nacionalisme (Afers/PUV, 2008).
