Antoni Martí Monterde ens ofereix un assaig sobre Joan Fuster, l’intel·lectual català més decisiu del nostre temps i un dels escriptors europeus més fascinadors del segle XX. La bibliografia sobre Joan Fuster és prou densa i extensa, però de vegades massa inconcreta o generalista, o centrada en la seua dimensió política, com a renovador del catalanisme des del País Valencià, impulsor de la idea de Països Catalans. Sense bandejar aquestes evidències, en aquest llibre es fa una aproximació a l’assaig humanista de Fuster, des de la seua reflexió sobre l’originalitat de l’escriptor i la sociologia de la cultura fins a la meditació sobre la cultura catalana en el marc de la identitat cultural europea. La paraula «assaig» —l’assaig perfecte, segons Fuster— esdevé l’eix central d’un llibre que recull dues dècades de recerca i pensament sobre Joan Fuster.

Antoni Martí Monterde (Torís, 1968) és professor de teoria de la literatura i literatura comparada a la Universitat de Barcelona, on dirigeix el Grup de Recerca Literatura Comparada en l’Espai Intel·lectual Europeu i el Màster Barcelona-Europa. També dirigeix la col·lecció «Figura», a Edicions de la UB, en què va aparèixer Joan Fuster. Figura de temps (2012), un llibre editat per ell mateix i per Teresa Rosell Nicolás. A més d’articles sobre Walter Benjamin, Victor Klemperer, Josep Pla, Eugeni d’Ors, Santiago Rusiñol, Peter Altenberg, Joan Estelrich, Charles Maurras, entre d’altres, i edicions d’Ernst Robert Curtius i Stefan Zweig, ha publicat L’erosió (2001), un relat d’un viatge literari a l’Argentina. Com a assagista, cal destacar els següents llibres seus: J. V. Foix o la solitud de l’escriptura (1998), Poética del Café (2007), Un somni europeu. Història intel·lectual de la literatura comparada (2011), El far de Løndstrup. Assaig sobre la memòria moral dels espais (2015) i París, Madrid, New York: les ciutats de lluny de Josep Pla (2019), amb el qual va obtenir el Premi Joan Fuster dels Premis Octubre 2018.

The biography of Joan Fuster is quite dense and large, but most part of the time is too vague or too general, or it focuses on his political dimension as a reformer of the ‘Catalanism’ that comes from the Valencian Country and as the promoter of the idea of Catalan Countries. Taking into account this evidences, this books approaches the humanistic essay of Fuster, from his reflexion about the originality of the author and the sociology of the culture to the meditation about Catalan culture within the cultural European identity framework. The word “essay” —the perfect essay, as Fuster would say— becomes the center of a book that collects two decades of research and thoughts about Joan Fuster.

Antoni Martí Monterde (Turís, 1968) is a professor of literary theory and comparative literature at the University of Barcelona, where he runs the Comparative Literature Research Group (Grup de Recerca Literatura Comparada) in Espai Intel·lectual Europeu and the Master Barcelona-Europa. As an essayist, his following books need to be highlighted: J.V. Foix or the solitude of writing (J. V. Foix o la solitud de l’escriptura, 1998), Coffee poetics (Poética del Café, 2007), An European dream. Intellectual history of the comparative literature (Un somni europeu. Història intel·lectual de la literatura comparada, 2011), The lighthouse of Løndstrup. Essay about the moral memory of spaces (El far de Løndstrup. Assaig sobre la memòria moral dels espais, 2015) and Paris, Madrid, New York: cities that are far away from Josep Pla (París, Madrid, New York: les ciutats de lluny de Josep Pla, 2019), with which he won the Joan Fuster Reward in the October Awards 2018.
