This classic of culture history is still, forty years after its first publication, an intriguing for the society and for the intellectual world of the modern Community of Valencia. Far from the academic rigidity and looking the complicity of the no-specialised reader, these texts, written rigorously but without renouncing the writer’s freedom of expression, raised problems, risked conjectures and, at the end, advanced hypothesis that opened the path to historiographic investigations. Topics like the humanists of the 16th century, the imaginary of the ‘agermanats’ or the sacred oratory of the Baroque are in Joan Fuster’s reflections much more than clever amenities: they become aspects of a past that has formed Valencian society of nowadays. Like he said, those humanists, revolutionaries and orators ‘we carry them on our backs. We ignore them and they are heavy over our social reflexes, over our individual conduct and everything… So, it is not superfluous knowing them’. Thus, this book is an invitation to go inside a decisive period of European history which, in the Valencian case, have particular resonances that are not exhausted in the limited concept of ‘Decline’.
