This book doesn’t pretend to be a history of Catalonia during the contemporary era. It still is however a complete guide of the grand subjects wich have deternmined the the dynamism of the catalan society from 1714 until the year 2000. There are two central interests. The first is analizing in wich way and with wich elements has Catalonia been able to survive as an area with a very strong and different personality, situated between two strong states that ae Spain and France in a historical period in wich these states pushed their will to be uniform to the limit. In the second aspect it’s explained in wich way the different conscience of the catalans has been able to coexist and has persisted in a modern, urban and industrial society, where the local identities are often confronted and have achived a great deal of internal codification.
