The Balearic Islands are probably one the most turistical countries in Europe, that is why they hae become a social laboratory wich is hard to repeat. The progressive turistification of the archipleago across the the XIX and XX centuries hasn’t only affected the economic and territoraial field. It has also changed the islander culture. Maybe we could even theorize if it has created it. Voyagers and voyagers have arrived at the Balears to consume a local idiosyncrasy wich often it has been corresponded with imaginary and invented fantasies. On another note, the local population, has many times partially recreated these cultural steriotypes in a more or less concient way. The present book doesn’t pose the turistical contact like an assimilation phenomenon and cultural homogenization, but like a fountain of creativity in wich the different collectives in contact have been able to develop multiple identities of gender, class or origin. From the multidisciplnary perspective, the different chapters treat with shows of literary and musical protests, advertising languages, architectural constructions, patrimonylitzacion procesess, festive rituals, nocturnal leisur and holiday practices like for examples of configurated turistic culture and its development at the Balearic Islands. However, we’re not offered a idealized vision of the cultural productions tied to the imaginary tourists. In all moments they take into account the unequal relationships of power that form with the touristical touch, both from the gender perspective and of class or in relationship with the colonial discourses. Therefore, the book also speaks abou the progressive importance of tourism in the social arranging at the Balearic Islands and the world in genral, from the XIX century until today.
