The book reconstructs a portion of the associative network of the city of Vic, shaped by the formal spaces of sociability for leisure, cultural and political purposes during the second half of 1800. In the context of the period, the voluntary associative phenomenon that was dealt here was considered as a “modern” strike –characteristic of the new times– and it became a relevant agent for the construction of a public space of growing importance. The pioneers of these strikes mainly belonged to the local elite, to the intermediate social areas and to the urban strata with a relatively well-off socioeconomic status. All this entities maze was a very notorious generator of cultural, ludic and festive activity linked to leisure time. It had a relevant role for the dissemination and the circulation of ideas, information and trendy habits. Among the great number of studied identities, the Literary Circle of Vic deserves a particular mention, as it had a critical importance for the cultural and associative life of the city.
