How to face the challenge of building a new productive model for Valencian society? How can we overcome the threats of global competition and the emergence of the knowledge economy that has made much of our traditional productive framework disappear? A new model is not improvised and should start from the traditional strengths of our entrepreneurs. They will have to lead a change where they must make strategic decisions about innovation in companies, the internationalization of the activity and the ethical responsibility of their actions. However, a change in the productive model is an extraordinary challenge, where the Valencian society must be together with its entrepreneurs. How? Mainly by educating people who are prepared for the new scenario, and by enabling credit and financing in order to boost business initiative and building efficient infrastructures that bring us closer to our markets. Valencian business has been historically dynamic when it had to face difficulties (lack of natural resources, lack of infrastructures, etc.). Thus, the "Valencia pathway" has materialized in a unique way of doing business, endowed with characteristic features that have traditionally generated well-being for our society (by opening to foreign markets, entrepreneurship, industrial clusters, etc.). However, the Valencian economy as an object of study has been invisible until a few decades ago. The present has new post-crisis scenarios where globalization, ICT, climate change, emerging countries or new geopolitical risks have shown the loss of our traditional competitive advantages.A delicate present not only due to the crisis, since numerous engines that drove our economy have disappeared or have become very weak. Thus, the profound transformation of our productive model requires a rigorous diagnosis and a clear approach to the adequate alternatives to face the numerous challenges we have.In this context, the work that you have in your hands aims —modestly— to inspire a business view of a country around a possible and desirable program. On the basis of our business tradition, our human capital and our entrepreneurial capacity, the challenge is to reinvent a new production model.
