“There’s hunger here!” was the motto for a citizens' movement campaigning. Beyond its solidarity dimension, it initiated a debate —uncomfortable but necessary— on poverty and marginalization in a pre-Olympic Barcelona that was presented as a showcase of modernity. The book is a detailed itinerary not only for the events but also for public positioning and the significant silences that arose.Based on a sociological approach to Ciutat Vella —the space where the campaign was focused— the origins, the ideological principles and the development of actions are analyzed, as well as the different political responses that it motivated. In this sense —as it is reflected in the book— this mobilization did not remain as a casual solidary outpouring. It was the opportunity to reopen an ideological debate on social marginalization and how to stop it. This book defends the recovery of the concept of solidarity while still recognizing the crisis of radical utopias and the model of the welfare society. The ideology of the progressive tradition —including contributions of Christian inspiration— is also defended in order to denounce and fight against inequality and injustice, which grows in the dark side of opulent societies.
