This story of a buried city and a man whose escape and defeat become the only homeland was simply lived or imagined by a poet thirsty with cruel dreams?

Through barren terrain, burnt villages, prisons and old mills full of impatient flesh, through plains and mountains located on the shores of the earth, somewhere in a Ukraine that is only a legendary Ukraine, Piotr Rawicz manages to reconstruct, at a wild pace, the hallucinating universe of Nazi persecution, to describe the mechanism of the extermination of a people.
The inflexible love that inhabits a thystic girl and that proves to be more powerful than torture, the suicidals who in the other world enter an aristocratic club, the last thoughts of a beetle when they see that a giant boot is about to shoot down on their fine armor... These are some of the elements of the human or extrahuman landscape that, impregnated with black humour, arise from this extraordinary book.

Piotr Rawicz was born in Ukraine on July 12, 1919, after the civil war. He studies law and Eastern languages. In 1941, with the German invasion, he fled to Poland. He hides his Jewish origins, but is arrested by the Gestapo and deported as a political prisoner in Auschwitz. Released in May 1945, he married, worked as a journalist and emigrated to France in 1947. He resumes his studies and acts as a diplomatic correspondent for foreign newspapers. The Blood of Heaven, his only novel, is written directly in French.
Piotr Rawicz committed suicide in May 1982, months after the wife's death.
