German and Swiss translators from nuts companies occupy a privileged position in the flourishing Reus of the 1920s, where they circulate in the fullness of their cosmopolitan youth and overflowing and ignite concern about the situation in their country. Nazism extends as the pension that welcomes them, transformed into the core of European relations, the group of guests lives intensely the changes that come. Between 1922 and 1939 unexpected events condition these lives and those that are hosted in the city and in the house. Social and political conflicts break with the trajectories of the protagonists and tension them to joy and suffering. The European context and the local environment frame a new and surprising city and collective life. Ernst and Horn, friends but antagonists, focus much of the narrative, open to other characters who also weave with their dialogues this exciting story. His reflections on literature, social life, economy and political current affairs, as well as the personal struggle in the Reus that welcomes them, make them unforgettable. The 1920s and 1930s opened up in The Pension of Germans with an unprecedented liveliness and, through the members of the group, foreigners and nationals, they emerged with strength and proximity, often traumatic, new habits of life, political struggles, cultural shocks and the convulsive panorama of a society that is exhausting.

Montserrat Corretger Sàez (Reus, 1950) has a long career as a professor in university and secondary education and as a researcher. His research focuses on literary history and criticism, with particular attention to the turn of the 19th century, the 1920s and 1930s and the exile of 1939. Among others, he has received the Prat de la Riba Prize 1996 from the Institute of Catalan Studies and the Serra d’Or Critics Award 2012 for Literary Studies. His first novel integrates the fruit of this period painting research.
