It was developed in Catalonia of the Middle Ages a heir system where the first son was the heir of everything and in exchange, he made sure the other children were left in good conditions and he took care of the parents. This system had several contradictions and weak points, and the different social classes developed strategies to face and make sure the welfare of the families would remain generation after generation. The book studies the logic of the system, how the different social classes used it and how it was in crisis throughout the 19th century. Likewise, the author establishes a comparison between the heir system and the equal heritage system prominent in the whole peninsula, to discover that every system has mechanisms to avoid the social degradation of the people who use it.
