This book analyses the figure of Enric Prat de la Riba from a double perspective. On the one hand, it offers a reading of how Catalan historiography in the last four decades has reflected on the first president of the ‘mancomunitat’ of Catalonia and the catalanist movement of the end of the 19th century beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the moments when the debates overflowed the historiographic frames and were extended to the political agenda. On the other hand, it follows the politic-cultural context in Europe where Prat de la Riba was formed, from a compared analysis both of the crisis of European political liberalism of the end of the 19th century and of the reorganisation of the politics that the European countries experienced. Thus, the book analyses the intellectual formation of Prat de Riba and the reception of his work of government, basic to understand one of the big interpretative axes of the history of the contemporary Catalonia and the will of a self-government of one sector of the citizens. In the year 2006 the book was awarded by ‘Patronato Casa Museo Prat de la Riba’ with the award to the project ‘Prat de la Riba and Catalan nationality’.
