The history of the ‘senyera’ of Valencia is truly a puzzle that has to be built with really diverse pieces – written or graphic – and that, usually, don’t seem to fit. The publication, at the end of the seventies, of Pere Maria i Bosch’s study Història de la Senyera al País Valenciá, had cleared that the traditional Valencian flag was formed by the four royal stripes and it wasn’t until the 19th century when the blue increase would be added, which later would be interpreted as a crown. Still, since then there has been known new resources – medieval and modern letters and documents about the conception of the local flags – which have been interpreted as a prove of the antiquity of the ‘senyera’ with the blue strip. In this book, in addition to providing some new data, we re-evaluate all the information available to try to establish what was the flag that the city of Valencia used as its own from the Middle Ages to the threshold of the 1900s.
