A Bitter Singularity is a book that won’t leave anyone indifferent. It reflects about the contribution of Joan Fuster and the study of Valencian Identity, analysing around 40 years of written production. It carries out a detailed investigation of the identity tale which the essay writer from Sueca, based on the past and with the language as a central factor, built about Valencian identity, specially the interpretation he did of the contemporary history. From the perspective of new intellectual and cultural history, and focusing on Nosaltres, els valencians, the book introduces a new reading of the work of Joan Fuster as well as of contemporary Valencian identity. The book’s cultural frame is the renewed field of international studies about the nation and the nationalism growing in the last decades. Opposing the studies done until now, it interprets Fuster’s thinking taking into account the background. Likewise, it gives some clues to rethink, from a critical vision, the validity of if its figure in the second decade of the 20th century.
