The creation of the Association of Doctors of Catalonia meant an important reinforcement to the health project of the government of the Mancomunitat in Catalonia. The different suggestions from the relevant medical team which formed the association improved health services and the sanitary customs of the Catalan society. The establishment of Primo de River’s dictatorship meant the forced deceleration of the activities and projects of the entity, but with the Second Republic many of the project that the association had organised since its foundation were consolidated. The Civil War and later Franco’s regime destroyed every project with the loss of some members and the disappearance of the entity. Right before the democratic instauration a group called Provincial Sanitary Activities Union appeared, they worked to recover the professional interest of the doctors. The organisation changed its name several times until in 1984 when it was named Doctors of Catalonia Union. Its fusion, years later, with the Federation of Associations of Hospital Doctors in Catalonia inspired the creation of the union Doctors in Catalonia which has distinguished itself for defending work, professional and social rights of its member and for making a collective proposal to recover the professional dignity and the social recognition for doctors.
