Why do most Valencians feel distanced from Catalonia and Catalans? Why does Valencian society present one of the highest rates of Spanish nationalism? To which has this become hegemonic and has conditions the main political parties? What role has the ‘blaverime’ had in the confirmation of the current Valencian identity? Although underrated during the transition – few people showed interest – at the end it decisively conditioned the political system in Valencia. This essay, based on a doctoral thesis “Anti-Catalanism in Valencia: identity and social reproduction of the speech of ‘blaversime’”, offers a didactive overview from social science to understand the complex relations between Valencia and Catalonia and among the Valencians. Therefore, it studies – avoiding the simplistic explanations – the successful social introduction of this regional anti-Catalanism thanks, among others, to means of communication, to a particular associative structure, to the instrumentalization of the old symbols, celebrations, rituals and identities, as well as to the banal regionalism of the Generalitat Valenciana. The author reflects on the populist, conservative, regionalist, anti-Catalanist and Spanish nationalist discourse.
