The burst of cultural Valencianism during the last part of third of the 20th century can’t be explained without taking into account its first years of gestation in the first post-war years. Franco’s victory represented the almost complete annihilation of any public manifestation of native language and culture; but, despite the repressive environment, small groups of Valencians in the city were able to make the Catalan public and assure its continuity. This book analyses the strategies, the programme of every group, how they overcame the obstacles of Franco’s regime and what was the range of complicity of the local authorities, which in the end caused a civil war among the Valencianists. It is also studied how the regime took advantage of the Valencianists feeling and changed its strategy during the 40s, and also how it built the network of relations with Catalonia and Mallorca, so important in the later years. Likewise, it is explained the difficulties of the surviving Valencianists had to carry on their cultural task and also the regime’s policies towards language and culture in Valencia. On the other hand, Faust Ripoll digs into the causes of the violent confrontation taken place between the two non-official Valencianists groups: the one from Carles Salvador and the group ‘Torre’ (formed by Miquel Adlert and Xavier Caspe).
